Jarry Singla EASTERN FLOWERS

With Eastern Flowers, Jarry Singla has created a trio that perfectly fulfils his intention of musical interculturality. His two highly renowned musical accompanists, WDR Jazz Prize winner Ramesh Shotham and double bassist Christian Ramond, also have Indian roots. Shotham originally comes from Chennai in southern India and is one of the busiest Indian jazz percussionists, not only thanks to his presence on over 150 albums. Christian Ramond also has a German-Indian background and has played with jazz legends such as Albert Mangelsdorff, Kenny Wheeler and Lee Konitz.

In their densely interwoven, often intuitive interplay, the three artists visibly trace the roots of their Indian origins, but at the same time they give free rein to their avant-garde exploratory urge. The diversity of Indian musical culture meets European harmonies, contemporary arrangements of South Indian temple music and classical Indian compositions appear alongside original compositions. As a composer, Jarry Singla epitomises the type of an absolute free spirit who knows how to incorporate such diverse influences as Ukrainian folklore, Moroccan rhythms or the harmonies of Olivier Messiaen into his music.
