With the Bass Summit ensemble, Henning Gailing and John Goldsby present a line-up that is special in every respect: three double basses plus a top-class piano and drum section. The band takes its cue from the ‘Superbass’ line-up led by the legendary Ray Brown, who thrilled audiences in the 1990s with a similar concept.
Double bassists usually tend to play in the background of a band. When the double bass begins a solo, the rest of the group falls silent so that the focus can be directed towards this instrument, which is somewhat quieter than its fellow musicians. Bass Summit simply turns the tables: with plenty of groove and swing, they perform themes, play solos and accompany their colleagues with great sensitivity. Henning Gailing and the American bassist John Goldsby (formerly bassist with the WDR Big Band) are responsible for the arrangements and are joined by the highly talented young Cologne-based bassist Tristan Sorg. Ultimately, there are three generations on stage: Goldsby was, amongst other things, Gailing’s teacher, and both were teachers to Sorg! Joining them are Leon Hattori, the current piano rising star of the young German jazz generation, and Dominik Raab on drums. An absolute highlight, not just for fans of low tones!
