Amiira – Klaus Gesing / Björn Meyer / Samuel Rohrer
(soprano sax, bass clarinet, electronics), (6-string electric bass, electronics), (dr, perc, electronics) …
The trio Amiira, consisting of Klaus Gesing, Björn Meyer and Samuel Rohrer, return 6 years after the release of their debut album. Given the turbulent changes the world has seen since then, it would be rash to expect them to pick up exactly where they left off. And indeed, the new programme "Curious Objects" reflects a significant expansion of the musicians' abilities. The fundamentals that characterised the trio - spatiality, elegant coolness and its non-verbal, narrative quality - are still very much present. Here, however, they are reinforced by an aesthetic that combines even broader physical and conceptual spaces.
Klaus Gesing and Björn Meyer are known for their releases on ECM Records, among others: Gesing participated in several ECM productions, including with Anouar Brahem; Meyer released his solo album Provenance there in 2017. These backgrounds are reflected in Amiira's precise, open approach to sound.
Overall, Curious Objects is an extremely effective antidote to spiritual and musical exhaustion, especially recommended for those who have already left the limitations imposed by genres behind. It is more than the sum of its parts, and the crossing of numerous boundaries never becomes an end in itself, or a goal in itself: instead, one experiences all this activity as a tool for unlocking and deciphering yet more seemingly disparate qualities and ideas.
