Son Jarocho from Veracruz (Mexico)
Son Jarocho or "Veracruz sound" is a regional folk music style of Mexican Son from the Mexican state of Veracruz on the Gulf of Mexico, which has developed along the coastal areas over the last two and a half centuries. It combines elements of indigenous music, the baroque music of the Spanish colonial period (fandango) and West African musical traditions. The lyrics often consist of humorous verses and revolve around themes that reflect life in Mexico during the colonial period and in the 19th century.
Son Jarocho is also characterised by the interplay of stringed instruments. The typical instruments are the small eight-string guitar jarana, the higher-pitched six-string requinto and the four-string leona, which takes on the role of bass.
The music of La Flota y El Son is characterised by the fine balance between local cultural roots, family heritage, musical excellence and immense stage experience, which they have demonstrated at numerous cultural and art festivals at home and abroad, from China and the USA to Canada.
