The quintet line-up around Peter Ehwald and Stefan Schultze with its traditional form of tenor saxophone, trumpet plus piano trio is a declaration of love for jazz and at the same time creates a context that is an invitation to reposition oneself. The basic principle of the STAMP quintet is the idea of developing music that leaves as much room as possible for development within a limited framework. No over-information - the compositions formulate the most important conditions for creating improvisational moments for the ensemble - directly and emotionally. Two very different and exciting soloists (trumpeter Tomasz Dąbrowski from Malmö and saxophonist Peter Ehwald from Berlin) set contrapuntal accents. The piano trio with Stefan Schultze from Berne and the Berliners Andreas Lang (b) and Moritz Baumgärtner (dr) fills and interprets the spaces of this music in a surprising and grandiose way.
"Basically, it's not about pitches, rhythms or harmonies, but about what the jazz quintet sound means to us. We wanted to translate a kind of nostalgia, or the meaning of an earlier time into our sonic language and into the here and now," explains Schultze.

    About the album

A conversation with six-string people - a very ambitious and fascinating project by drummer Peter Weiss, in which he brings together the crème de la crème of German jazz guitarists. Great fun! No senseless noodling, no posing or other look-how-fast-I-am. The duos with one of the "Six-String-People" and Peter Weiss are great. From Monkish to Scandinavian expanses, from Tom Waits to Ornette, each one as different, as individual as the protagonists themselves. Peter Weiss belongs to the German jazz aristocracy, he is a drummer of the old guard, as the saying goes. His ride cymbal (and what he does with it) still belongs to the premier league of jazz drummers. He holds the whole project together, is like the big bracket around it. Always helpful to the band and particularly strong with the loose, ternary grooves.

    About the album

Stylistically, as always with Rupi, the concert album is difficult to classify: a fascinating musical mix of jazz, funk, urban beats, industrial, lounge – the result is club sound with an addictive factor – and with a lot of atmosphere – impressions, visions, memories of that Life in the Ruhr area in the 60s – a life caught in the rhythm of industry – normal everyday life, unsentimental and still gripping – the sounds almost psychedelic – hypnotizing beats – catchy melodies.
